CIVILS MARRIAGES AND CIVILS UNIONS

A celebration that fits you!

Mtre Anne-Marie Coutu is a competent officiant who solemnize civil marriages and civil unions. The notary assists the spouses in this commitment with a personalized approach, all of this in accordance with the requirements of the law. An initial meeting allows her to take into consideration your desires and needs for the celebration. The future spouses decide where their civil marriage or union will take place, otherwise it can be solemnized at our office in a dedicated room. If the spouses want to sign a marriage or a civil union contract, the notary can prepare it since it must be notarized.

As a competent officiant, the notary offers a lovely ceremony where she states the rights and obligations of the spouses mentioned in the Civil Code of Québec and receives their signatures for the marriage or union declaration to be sent to the Directeur de l’État Civil. Then, we always give the opportunity to the family and friends to get reunited and take some pictures making this event memorable. The warm welcome of our team makes this precious moment even more valuable for the spouses who are also surrounded by their witnesses and relatives.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CIVIL MARRIAGE AND A CIVIL UNION

The civil union and marriage are very alike since the spouse’s rights and obligations are the same. The major difference between them consists in their dissolution which in case of a civil union can simply be done by a joint notarial declaration or by judgment if there is a disagreement versus the marriage that requires a divorce pronounced by the Court. Another factor for the future spouses to consider before getting engaged is that civil unions valid in the province of Quebec, but they are not necessarily everywhere else.
